My bet is that they will retcon it. But they will do it in such a way that it is ambiguous – we will be left not knowing whether it is the Doctor’s true backstory or not, and will be left to speculate amongst ourselves.
That way they restore the mystique of the character without openly and publicly renouncing their support for Chibnall’s work. They look after their own at the BBC.
